[AP] lectures on ARCHITECTURAL LEAGUE / NYC

306090: On Models
Emily Abruzzo, James Buckhouse, D. Graham Burnett, Eric Ellingsen, John Nastasi, and Jonathan Solomon
Thursday, February 7
7:00 p.m.
The Urban Center
457 Madison Avenue

On Models is an opportunity to reflect on the increasing use of models developed for disciplines not traditionally associated with the field of architecture in the design, making, and study of architecture. At the same time architects are employing these models in increasingly rigorous ways, they are transforming the role of the models from appropriated images to adopted processes, complicating the fields of contemporary art, architecture, and research in wonderful ways.

On Models will ask: How do these shifts fit into the development of new technologies in modeling, both in contemporary and historical terms? How do the changing attitudes towards physical models affect changing attitudes towards theoretical models? How do models bridge gaps between disciplines? Who and what are our role models and how does design in a post-post Modern era acknowledge this kind of sharing, borrowing, inspiration, and blurring of boundaries? On Models will bring 306090 issue editors Emily Abruzzo, Jonathan Solomon, and Eric Ellingsen together with issue contributors artist James Buckhouse, historian of science at Princeton D. Graham Burnett, and architect and educator John Nastasi.

[AP] Architectural LEAGUE / Urban Computing and Its Discontents

Urban Computing and Its Discontents
Architectural LEAGUE

Urban Computing and Its Discontents
Situated Technologies Pamphlet series launch and panel discussion
Adam Greenfield, Mark Shepard and Eric Paulos

Friday, December 14
7:00 p.m.
The Urban Center
457 Madison Avenue

A reception and panel discussion celebrating the launch of the Situated Technologies Pamphlet series (see below). Adam Greenfield and Mark Shepard, co-authors of Situated Technologies Pamphlet 1: Urban Computing and Its Discontents, and Eric Paulos of Intel Research, will consider how ubiquitous computing may change urban life in this panel discussion launching the series.

This fall the League launches a nine-part publication series--co-edited by Mark Shepard, Omar Khan, and Trebor Scholz--to be published over the next three years, exploring the implications of ubiquitous computing for architecture. Born out of the three-day symposium presented by the League, the Center for Virtual Architecture, and the Institute for Distributed Creativity in October 2006, the series will consider how our experience of the city and the choices we make in it are being affected by mobile communications, pervasive media, ambient informatics and other “situated” technologies. How will the possibility of designing increasingly responsive environments alter the way architects conceive of space? What do architects need to know about urban computing and what do technologists need to know about cities? Situated Technologies Pamphlets will be edited by a rotating list of leading researchers and practitioners from art, architecture, technology, and sociology.

This pamphlet is available as a print-on-demand publication. To purchase a copy, click here. For more information about the Architecture and Situated Technologies project, visit www.situatedtechnologies.net.

He lives and works with his wife, artist Nurri Kim, in New York City.

Mark Shepard is an artist, architect and researcher whose cross-disciplinary practice draws on architecture, film, and new media in addressing new social spaces and signifying structures of contemporary network cultures. His research investigates the impact of mobile and pervasive technologies on architecture and urbanism. His current project, the Tactical Sound Garden [TSG] Toolkit, is an open source software platform for cultivating virtual sound gardens in urban public space. It has been presented at museums, festivals and arts events internationally, including the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore, Maryland; Conflux 2006; Brooklyn, New York; ISEA 2006, San Jose, California; SIGGRAPH 2007, San Diego, California; Futuresonic, Manchester, UK; Sonar Festival, Barcelona, Spain; The Electronic Language International Festival – FILE 2007, São Paolo, Brazil; and the Arte.Mov Festival for Mobile Media, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Eric Paulos is a Senior Research Scientist at Intel in Berkeley, California where he is the founder and director of the Urban Atmospheres research group - challenged to employ innovative methods to explore urban life and the future fabric of emerging technologies across public urban landscapes. His areas of expertise span a deep body of research territory in urban computing, social telepresence, robotics, physical computing, interaction design, persuasive technologies, and intimate media. Eric is a regular contributor, editorial board member, and reviewer for numerous professional journals and conferences. He received his PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley where he helped launch a new robotic industry by developing some of the first internet tele-operated robots including Space Browsing helium filled blimps and Personal Roving Presence devices (PRoPs). Eric is also the founder and director of the Experimental Interaction Unit and a frequent collaborator with Mark Pauline of Survival Research Laboratories. Eric's work has been exhibited at the InterCommunication Center (ICC) in Japan, Ars Electronica, ISEA, SIGGRAPH, the Dutch Electronic Art Festival (DEAF), SFMOMA, the Chelsea Art Museum, Art Interactive, LA MOCA, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the ZKM, and a performance for the opening of the Whitney Museum’s 1997 Biennial Exhibition.

[AP] Reimagining Risk

American Power: What’s Really at Risk?
Mitch Epstein with Joanna Lehan

Thursday, December 6
7:00 p.m.
Donnell Auditorium
20 West 53rd Street

A conversation between photographer Mitch Epstein and Joanna Lehan, Associate Editor, Books at the Aperture Foundation.

Mitch Epstein’s current work, American Power, examines energy usage and the idea of excess in the United States. These pictures were made on forays to energy production sites and their environs. Epstein plays with the definition of American power, probing not just corporate power but the powers of nature, sexuality, consumption, and size.

Environmental risks aside, Epstein has discovered that in the United States, since 9/11, making art freely in public space, and artists themselves, are at risk due to governmental and corporate surveillance and security. Epstein will show images from American Power, and speak about cultural, environmental, and artistic risk.

Mitch Epstein’s photographs are in numerous major museum collections, including New York’s Metropolitan Museum, Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His recent books include Mitch Epstein: Work (Steidl, 2007) and Family Business (Steidl, 2003). Epstein is the recipient of the Berlin Prize in Arts and Letters, Spring 2008, from the American Academy in Berlin.

Admission is free for League members; $10 for non-members. League members may make reservations by emailing rsvp@archleague.org or by calling 212-980-3767. AIA and New York State continuing education credits are available.

Following the seminal “Heritage at Risk” conference held in Moscow in April 2006, this symposium addresses pressing issues in the preservation of the modernist legacy of the most significant edifices built by radical Soviet architects in the 1920s and 1930s. Through two keynote addresses, six case studies, and a roundtable discussion, Russian, European, and American architects, historians, and policymakers explore the current situation and eventual destiny of Soviet avant-garde architecture, which is increasingly threatened by neglect and speculative development.
